European Turtle Dove is a migratory bird commonly seen in Qatar during spring
and autumn. Known for its distinctive markings and gentle call, it is a
notable passage migrant during its seasonal journeys through the
region. Habitat & Behavior Feeding: Primarily forages on the ground, searching for seeds and other food. It is highly alert and takes flight quickly when sensing danger. Perching: Often seen perched on electrical wires, sometimes mingling with other dove species. Flocks: Frequently spotted in flocks, particularly during the spring migration. Appearance & Physical Characteristics Neck Patch: Black and white markings on the neck, a key feature for identification. Wing Feathers: Rufous-edged feathers on the upper wings add to its unique appearance. Overall Look: Sleek and elegant, with soft coloration that distinguishes it from other doves. Call The European Turtle Dove’s call is a long, soothing “turrrrrr – turr,” distinct from the calls of other dove species found in Qatar. Size and Comparison Medium-sized compared to other doves, the European Turtle Dove is slightly smaller and more slender than the Eurasian Collared Dove. Its distinctive markings and elegant features make it easy to differentiate. Seasonal Presence The European Turtle Dove is observed in Qatar during two migration periods: Spring: Commonly seen in April to May. Autumn: Appears again in September to October as it migrates south. The European Turtle Dove’s graceful flight, unique appearance, and seasonal migrations make it a beautiful and memorable sight in Qatar. |
