This diminutive and handsome duck is a very common passage migrant and winter visitor. It is found at the shallow margins of freshwater ponds and lakes, as well as salt water marshes, feeding on vegetation. When disturbed, it flies up almost vertically off the water to escape predators. It is the smallest of Qatar's ducks. The male has a distinctive whistling call, while the female utters a high-pitched "quack".
