A passage migrant and winter visitor, whose habit of bobbing its body up and down while feeding on the ground is distinctive. It feeds along seashores as well as in the shallow mud of freshwater lagoons and fields. It prefers areas where there are rocks and stones, and can be seen probing among these for insects and larvae. The plumage is an undistinguished brown and white, but with a distinctive white oval at the shoulder.
