Another wading bird with long legs and long bill, that is a passage migrant and winter visitor. It is adapted for wading in the shallow mud of freshwater lagoons and pools, probing for small prey below the surface. It is usually a solitary bird, though sometimes can be found in small groups of two or three. In flight, it appears to have an almost black head, wings and tail stripes with a gleaming white body.
